[Bookplate for Sir Charles Cockerell] Armorial bookplate. The shield is divided in half to show the arms of both the husband and wife. The left shield, representing the husband, is divided into six sections two of which portray roosters, between which is a face surrounded by leaves. Above the top rooster is a crescent signifying the second son. The middle section is argent (silver or white) with two chevrons. The top chevron is adorned with three flowers and at the top and bottom of the chevron are three eagle heads ; the bottom chevron is adorned with three roundlets and above and below the chevron are three flowers or leaves. Between the chevrons and at the centre of the six sections is a small shield with a left hand facing palm-out. The top right corner shows two lion heads and a bend adorned with three fleur-de-lis. On the bottom left corner is a lion. The second shield shows two lions passant guardant on a black background with an or border. Above the shield is a wreathed helm facing forward with a raised visor therein signifying barony or knighthood. Above the helm is a crescent and crowned tiger head. On both sides of the shield are angelic supporters each carrying a flag staff (adorned with the sun and crescent moon) as well as palm/laurel fronds (on which birds are perched). The figures are adorned in robes decorated with fleur-de-lis and their chests are imprinted with crosses. 22. [Bookplate for Paul Hahn by J. M.] Black and blue ink on cream paper. The rectangular border consists of three black lines of decreasing thickness towards the center. In the top right corner is a small butterfly with outspread wings with some decoration. Below the butterfly is text in stylized, capitalized, black serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed below in slightly different stylized font in a larger size. Underneath the owner’s name is a larger butterfly with more elaborate outstretched wings. The text forms a single column in the left-hand side of the bookplate. To the right of the text is a bookshelf that appears to extend down to the bottom of the bookplate. Books are stacked in various ways on the shelf, spines facing out. In front of the bookshelf is a cello. The base of the cello sits in the bottom center of the bookplate and the neck extends up towards the top right-hand corner. At the top of the cello sits a butterfly, less elaborate than the others, that has been coloured in with blue ink. To the right of the cello is a tall object extending up along the bookshelf. A section of papers, potentially sheet music, in a folder in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left corner, the bookplate creator’s initials are printed in capitalized, black, serif font surrounded by a thin black border. 23. [Bookplate for Klara Weiss and J. E. Horvath] Black and dark pink ink on tan paper. On the bottom left corner of the image there is an open book with pink flowers that continue in to ocean waves receding in the background. 24. [Bookplate for Dundas Public Library] Black ink on brown paper. A border made up of pommy crosses houses the name of the library and its borrowing policies. The title of the library is printed in Germanic text, and beneath it is a double-lined, horizontal divider. In the bottom half of the plate is printed the borrowing policy. 25. [Bookplate for J. H. Gill] Black ink on brown paper. Decorated arch at top is inscribed with school motto. Within the arch we see the gable and roof of the school. Below this is text enclosed by decorated border. Lamb in a circle at very bottom. 26. [Bookplate for William Ralph Howard by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream colored paper. The image depicts a tall ship at sea with all sails unfurled, in a swell of water, with a large cumulous cloud in the background. The image is framed by a length of rope that circles the entire bookplate. Below, a heraldic device is displayed in a circular frame. A broken ionic order column is in the center, with the top half of the column resting on the right side of the base and an oval shield with a flower on it leaning on the left side of the base. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is presented in a solid-colored shield. The rope frame meets at both sides of the shield: on the left, the rope holds an anchor and on the right it holds a ship lantern. 27. [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] Black ink on cream paper with shiny surface. The crest features an armoured arm clutching a sword extending from a crest-wreath. Below is an esquires helm, from which extends mantling on either side. The mantling is light on top and darkens to black at the bottom. The shield is has a chevron with thin, horizontal, black lines. Above the chevron, the shield is charged with two crescent moons with the points facing upwards. Below the chevron, the shield is charged with the same arm from the crest, in this case tilted 90 degrees so that the arm is horizontal. While the crest arm holds a straight sword, the shield arm is holding a sword with a curved blade. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, block serif font on a curling ribbon. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, black, sentence case cursive font. A second line features the date printed in smaller, thin, stylized black font. 28. [Bookplate for Fraser Institute] Black ink on cream paper. A bust of a reindeer is printed above a heraldic ribbon with French wording within it. Directly beneath is a second, larger heraldic ribbon containing text indicating presentation. In the middle are several blank lines containing the entered name of the presenting institution and the date. At the bottom is a third heraldic ribbon with the receiving institute written within it in Germanic lettering. 29. [Bookplate for Fraser Institute] Black ink on cream paper. Directly beneath is a second, larger heraldic ribbon containing text indicating presentation. On blank dotted lines is written the presenting institution and the date. At the bottom is a third heraldic ribbon with the receiving institute written within it in Germanic lettering. 31. [Bookplate for Lilian Guest Cape] Black ink on cream paper. A crest features a lion passant with a sword in its right paw standing on a torse. A motto is printed on a small ribbon in capitalized, sans serif, black font. Bolder capitalized, sans serif, black font is below the motto. A larger ribbon with elaborated curled ends features capitalized, serif, black fond. Many lines of text follow below in a roughly diamond shape. The text is printed in capitalized, bold, serif, black font. There one final ribbon at the bottom of the bookplate featuring the owner’s name in thinner, sans serif, black font. 32. [Bookplate for Ecole Modele Jacques-Cartier by John Henry Walker] Black ink on cream paper. An insignia tops the bookplate, featuring a radiant cross and open book above a beaver and surrounded by maple leaves. Included is a banner with a motto. Below, the name of the school and a pre-formatted prize text is printed in two fonts. The class, date, name of the recipient and signature of the principal are handwritten in black ink. An ornate scrolled border surrounds the text and insignia. The printer is listed at the bottom. 33. [Bookplate for Joint Board of Theological Colleges] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate banned frame with leaf sprigs houses the text. At the bottom of the frame, the letters MTD are incorporated amid a sprig. The outside of the frame is decorated with a repeating leaf pattern. The corners of the frame are four shields. The top left tablet shield is dotted (gold) and charged with an undecipherable center object. An open book sits atop the shield. The top right tablet shield is horizontally lined (azure) and charged with a downward facing bird (dove) at the chief and an open book at the base. A tree sits atop the shield. The bottom left Norman pointed shield is horizontally lined (azure) with a cross (argent). It is charged with an open book with writing over the center of the cross. A coronet sits atop the shield. The bottom right spade shield is blank (argent) and is charged with an anchor. A mitre sits atop the shield. 34. [Bookplate for Jos-N. Chaussé M.D.] Black ink on cream paper. An oval border with decoration at the top and bottom surrounds an illustration of a naked female figure whose arms are turning into tree branches, referencing Daphne of Greek mythology. The women’s tree branch arms extend beyond the oval border. She is looking to her left with a laurel crown on other head tied with ribbons while her long black hair flows past her right shoulder. A long, curling ribbon wraps around her back upper body, across her torso, and then back around her legs. Text is printed on the ribbon in bold, black, capitalized, serif font. The woman stands with her ankles crossed and is wearing strappy open-toe flat shoes. She stands in front of an open book. In the top left corner of the left page are initials printed in capitalized, stylized, block font. The woman also stands atop of a closed book, with its pages facing the viewer. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate, text is printed in various stylized black fonts. 35. [Bookplate for Paul Gouin] Black ink on cream paper. Border consisting of two thin black lines with solid black squares in the corners. Capitalized black serif-font written inside the border around an image. Image depicts a wooden house with a road in front. There are several clouds in the sky. There is a large tree in front of the side of the house, with the branches of another tree in the top right corner. The house has a wooden fence. In the foreground in the bottom right corner is grass. 36. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 37. [Bookplate for P. Gagnon] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a beaver lying on a crest-wreath. There are maple leaf branches extending from both sides of the beaver. The beaver is surrounded by a half-circle border with the motto in black, capitalized sans-serif font written across the arc. The shield is divided per fess, with the top half being further divided per pale and the upper left hand portion is divided into three horizontal sections. The topmost left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with two fleurs-de-lis. The middle left hand section is argent with sable stripes charged with a lion passant. The bottom left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with three maple leaves connected at the stem. The upper right hand side is argent charged with two pieces of equipment, one atop the other, and a pair of scissors below. The equipment has a small curved bottom with two long, curving handles on top with a spike pointing through the lower end of the handles. Below the top half is a thin black banner with white capitalized sans-serif text. Below the banner is an image of a natural forest and coastal landscape with a ship with two tall masts in the water. On the coast, there are people, possible colonizers, interacting. A large cross has been erected on the coast on the right hand side of the image. The dexter supporter and sinister supporter are moose standing a curling ribbon with text in capitalized black sans-serif font. 38. [Bookplate for Hall by J. T. Ralph] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crane standing on one foot facing to the left with one claw curled. It is standing on a patch of grass atop a crest wreath. The shield is divided per pale. The left-hand side is further divided with a chief. The smaller top section features sable stripes and is charged with three five point stars each decorated with shading. The bottom section is argent and charged with a sable chevron engrailed. The section is also charged with three black lion heads erased, two over one. The right-hand side also has sable stripes and is charged with Three white flowers, two over one. The bottom flower is larger than the top two flowers. The flowers have very round petals. The center of the flower is an open circle and straight lines extend out to the round petals. Below the shield is a motto printed on a black and white striped banner shaped like a V. The ends of the banner have circular cut outs. Below the motto is a similar, larger ribbon with the name of the bookplate owner printed in large, block font. The last three letters are smaller and in white with black shading. The first latter is printed on a small, white shield in a black striped larger black letter with black shading. At the bottom point of the shield is printed the bookplate’s creator’s name and place in small, black, serif, sentence case font. 39. [Bookplate for Robert A. Harrison] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a demi-lion rampant on the top part of a castle tower. The lion is wearing a crown and holding a floral wreath in its paws. There is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm surrounded by elaborately curling sable and argent mantling that extends out to each side and tapers down to the base of the bookplate. Shield is sable and charged with three demi-lions rampant, two over one. The lions are wearing crowns. The motto is below the shield printed in capitalized block white letters on a banner with curling ends. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, gothic sentence-case font at the bottom of the bookplate. 40. [Bookplate for Edward Feild Hebden by H. A. W.] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a lion passant on a crest-wreath. Below the crest is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm with elaborate, ribbon-like, mantling extending out and down the entire bookplate. The shield is argent and divided quarterly. The top left corner and bottom right corner are charged in the center with 5 black diamonds. The background pattern features a repeating geometric of three dots atop an arrow with three flared out points at the bottom. The top right corner and the bottom left corner are charged with a cross patonce. Below the shield is a ribbon with a larger section foregrounded and a smaller section closer to the bottom of the bookplate. The motto is printed on that small section in capitalized, sans-serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed on the foregrounded section in larger capitalized serif font.
